bjdykeman team cropMy name is BJ Dykeman and this is my first year at Mission Year. So far over the course of the past few weeks I have been getting to know my teammates, my neighborhood, and my service site in Houston, Texas. My service site this year will be at a homeless shelter called Star of Hope. Star of Hope is a shelter for the homeless and at the location I will be working at, Monday through Thursday this year, they focus on providing emergency services for women and families in crisis. My responsibilities will include doing whatever my supervisor tells me to do like help with the front desk, stock the stock room, help with computer lab, help with the closet, and more. It is going to be a great experience for me.

Over the course of the past few weeks since leaving home, I have been participating in several weeks of orientation to prepare for the year ahead and I have been learning a lot. For example, I have learned that in order to love my neighbor, I must love myself. There has been so much more learning I have done and will continue to process, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

I am working towards a fundraising goal of $10,000 for the year that helps cover all of my living expenses, including rent, groceries, transportation, insurance and more. Your generosity in making a financial donation is going to make it possible for me to live, serve, and love in Houston this year! Would you consider supporting me this year with a donation? You can either make an online donation at www.missionyear.org/thankyou4caring.org/donate or you can mail checks made out to Mission Year with my fundraising ID (15-9021) to the Mission Year office at:
