Public Stewardship
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life
as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
Christ was actively engaged with all people around him. He went on the road to take the gospel message throughout Galilee, Judea, and Samaria. He preached to rich and poor, powerful and weak. He embraced and healed both neighbor and outcast. He fed and ate with sinners as well as with friends and family. Jesus did not seek accolades, position, or gain, but offered his life to the Glory of God.
The book of Acts demonstrates the powerful work of the Holy Spirit as the Apostles lived out Christ’s example of service to others. Like the early disciples we should be engaged publicly in service, “not looking too your own interests, but each of you to the interests of others” Philippians 2:4
As we follow in the footsteps of Christ and the pattern of the apostles, God will provide ways to use our individual gifts. Some have gifts of teaching or leadership, others have gifts of companionship, comfort, or healing. Some have professional, technical, or creative skills that can be used to help others and build them up. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10
The ways we carry out Public Stewardship will vary, but when we serve with no expectation of anything in return, Christ teaches us that others see our good deeds and we become a light that shines before others, glorifying God in heaven. We become Christ’s hands and feet in a world in need of God’s Grace.
